The death of Mumtaz Mahal left the emperor so disappointed and heart broken that he went into seclusion for two years and reappeared wearing glasses and hair completely grey and white. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in the same year and completed in 1653. Soon after its completion, Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in the Agra Fort, so he could only gaze at his creation only through the window.
